After completing High School, he joined the military service, enlisting in the US Army for paratrooper duty. He served a total of five years, nine months, and thirteen days on active duty, His last duty assignment was with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge among other decorations.
